The Iconic pays homage to the history, site and season of premium Australian red winemaking from the Barossa Valley as well as the Calabria family’s love and dedication for the craft of winemaking and nurturing century old vineyards.
Australian Vintners, Calabria Family Wines are proud to celebrate the release of the new vintage, Calabria The Iconic Reserve Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014. This vintage marks the 100th vintage of this exceptional old vine vineyard, classifying the vines as ‘Barossa Centenarian’; equal or greater than 100 years of age.
THE STORY OF THE CENTENARIAN VINES
The Iconic Grand Reserve Barossa Valley Shiraz celebrates the Calabria Family Wines arrival in the Barossa Valley; and the culmination of three generations of winemaking. Each vintage, while authentically Barossa, has its own unique profile, representing 100 years of agriculture, art and science in every glass.
The fruit sourced for The Iconic is from 12 rows of Barossa Centenarian vines, planted in 1914 on the now ‘William Vineyard’. They have survived drought, flood, vine pull schemes and everything in between and what is left are gnarly, knotted and low yielding vines carefully restored and nurtured by the Calabria family to produce small quantities of intensely flavoured fruit.
Hand-harvested, plunged and gravity fed to barrel, under Bill’s watchful eye, to produce an alluring and flavoursome Shiraz.
“Someone was working hard in 1914 when they planted these vines, and we’ve done our very best to maintain the integrity of the vines and the fruit they produce. This premium wine represents not only our family’s love and dedication for the craft of winemaking, but also the families before us that worked hard and made sacrifices to develop the vineyard.” Bill Calabria
In 2010, the family expanded their portfolio into the Barossa Valley with the purchase of two iconic vineyards in the region, which contained the centenarian vines. It was not until two years later that the vines started to produce a high enough quality of grape that satisfied the family winemakers.
“The Iconic means a lot to our family, and especially to my father,” said 3rd Generation family member; Andrew Calabria. “His goal in restoring the centenarian vineyards was really just about putting the love back into the vines. Dad considers himself somewhat of a custodian to this vineyard and has passed along his great pride in working with and caring for it.”
Chief Winemaker of Calabria Family Wines, Emma Norbiato, commented on the Calabria family’s commitment to the vineyard; “The vines are old, brittle and incredibly fragile, they have survived drought and floods and at times they had been neglected, but they are still in the ground and we all feel privileged to be able to not only touch and care for something that is 100 years old, but to be able to then develop a superb wine. Not many plants in agriculture last one hundred years and the fact that they are still producing makes them incredibly special.”
“The 2014 vintage release represents the hard work of all those that have toiled this land before us, resulting in a culmination of 100 years agriculture, art and science in every glass. Aromas of black licorice and blood plum weave through subtle layers of spicy oak. Powerful and concentrated yet pure and divine - true to its Barossa heritage. Crafted with longevity in mind, The Iconic can be cellared for ten to twenty years. An ideal accompaniment to roast lamb shoulder with all the trimmings."
